A Neurofascial Approach to Spinal Movement
Michael HammMichael Hamm.  8 hours.  North Shore Kauai

A debate takes place in the minds & hands of manual therapists: Are movement and postural patterns determined by fascial architecture, by joints and ligaments, by ascending reflex patterns, by emotions, by mental concepts, by the social and physical environment?

Before you answer, think of the pitfalls of choosing just one of these. The real question is not which of these is determinative, but how they interact and when to focus on one versus the other. Nowhere in the body is this dilemma more true than at midline — the Spine and its Movements — where small compensations often result in big changes elsewhere in the body.

This special 8-hour class is designed for any manual therapist interested in the confluence of structure and function at the spine. We will make a close examination of anatomy, palpation, and assessment.

INFO AND SKILLS COVERED

  • Embryology & Evolution of the Spine: Movement Needs Structure
  • Bones, Ligaments, and Fasciae: The Passive Constraints on Movement
  • Somatic Neural Segments: How Skin, Myofascia, and Viscera talk to each other
  • Movement Issues from a Neurofascial Perspective (Hint: The Brain doesn’t think in muscles)
  • Palpation Practice: Facet Joints, Fascial Layers, Spinal Nerves
  • Assessment: How to think about what you see and feel

Embodied Anatomy: The Heart of Perception
Michael HammMichael Hamm.  8 hours.  North Shore Kauai

You work with bodies — your own and others’. You try to help folks move, perceive, and inhabit their bodies more skillfully. How do these skills arise? How can a person find their own path into embodiment?

This class is about the breakthrough moments in that process — how to prime a mind for a richer connection with the body. We will be drawing connections between disparate and deep methods. We will weave together insights from modern embryology, fascial anatomy, and somatic neuroscience.  We will highlight some profound relationships between traditions like Yoga, Martial arts, Meditation, as well as more recent schools like Somatics and Contact Improv.  We’ll meld the scientific and artistic aspects of the mind-body connection. Whether your interest in embodiment is clinical, creative, expressive, or exploratory, this class will deepen your perceptual skills.

METHODS: We’ll be focusing on the Heart, both in terms of its precise anatomy and its metaphorical significance. Participants will leave with new skills and insights in:

  • Guided meditation with a somatic focus — ‘Surfaces and Centers’.
  • The embryologic origins of the heart, pericardium, diaphragm, and vagus nerves.
  • Palpation of the pericardium-diaphragm.
  • Guided embryologic movement
  • Postural observation and standing palpation for fulcrums/pivots.
  • Building a meaningful perceptual framework with a client/patient/performer.

__________
Lomilomi
Dr. Mark Olson. 24 hours. $350

Lomilomi is a Polynesian style of massage that uses long, broad strokes with the forearms and elbows in a fluid manner. In temple-style lomilomi, the practitioner ‘dances’ around the client’s body, with arms, feet, and breath synchronized. The long strokes gracefully glide over the lines that typically divide the body, creating a more integrative experience. No longer able to verbally identify which area of the body is being massaged, the client’s mind lets go…and the muscles follow.

__________
NeuroMassage
Langdon Roberts

NeuroMassage is a unique therapeutic system that combines biofeedback and bodywork to improve health by making intentional changes in the relationships between the brain, the nerves, the organs and the muscles. Neuromassage teaches the client to relax deeply, and to maintain the relaxation long after the massage has ended. The client experiences a state in which they are aware of how their tension levels and brain activity respond to the combination of the therapist’s touch and their own inner processes. This state allows clients to release chronic tension within deep muscles, re-set the “pain threshold” in order to reduce chronic pain, heal from physical and psychological trauma, and experience a profound transformation of body awareness. With this new level of awareness, client and therapist work together to create an individualized plan for learning to access and maintain states of relaxation throughout daily life.

In addition to the above electives, we may be offering some additional weekend workshops:

Responding to Trauma: Mindful, Somatic Skills for Body-Centered Practitioners
(built into the Somatic Bodywork program now)

The physiological drives and processes involved in traumatic activation require a informed response effective at meeting the body on it’s own terms.

Through lectures, exercises, and demonstrations, participants will learn to:

  • Understand how trauma may interfere with healing, change, or learning.
  • Spot signs of trauma arising in sessions or other interactions.
  • Interrupt traumatic activation using applied mindfulness.
  • Build regulation skills to ensure working within the client’s window of tolerance.
  • Expand and strengthen inner and outer resources for clients coping with symptoms of trauma.
  • Educate clients about the options for coping more effectively with – and ultimately resolving – trauma and stress symptoms in everyday life. This experiential workshop offers simple skills for managing and stabilizing traumatic activation. Appropriate for counselors, bodyworkers, coaches, teachers, and anyone seeking effective response to symptoms of trauma.

__________
Transpersonal Somatic Therapy: A Personal Growth and Professional Skills Training
Paul Linn

Process, inquiry, and meditation support a dynamic awakening life. What was previously unconscious or obscured emerges and reveals that all that is felt, thought, perceived and sensed is always changing… ever new. This offers a very direct experience of the continuousness of transformation, while revealing an opening to the ever present “ground of being”.

This experiential retreat workshop will utilize: observational insight meditation, non – dual inquiry, and a variety of somatic and transpersonal therapeutic processes, both in the group context as well as in paired exercises. These processes will assist in awakening to a life of greater ease and joy beyond habit, concepts and beliefs – beyond ‘state’ or experience dependency. Participants will immediately be able to adapt these methods and understandings to their own relationships and therapy practices.

Perhaps of greater significance is the possibility that the whole structure of needs that often drive and propel us humans to live in limitation can be seen through, and can at least begin to dissolve. This experiential recognition reveals a natural and simple openness that unbinds what appears bound, while awakening to a life of greater dynamic, ease and causeless joy.

  • Meditation, Inquiry and Guided Experiential Awareness Practices
  • Talks/theory/discussions
  • Paired practices and Circle work

Paul Linn is the co-founder of Florida Gainesville Vipassana Society, Inc., and has been involved with insight meditation and dharma teachings for over 30 years. A psychotherapist, bodyworker, and teacher, he offers seminars and retreats throughout the US mainland and Hawaiian Islands. His teaching style facilitates the immediacy of ‘openings or awakenings’ as ordinary, direct and inherent. http://www.floridavipassana.org/
